An agreement, (still awaiting approval,) was made this week that will make Kansas City Power & Light's energy efficiency rebates available to all of its Missouri customers, as opposed to the select regions where available in the past. Previously only offered as very limited pilot programs, KCP&L's new agreement would bring these efficiency programs into their traditional service territory, making rebates for energy efficiency more readily accessible.
In 2012, KCP&L dropped most rebate offerings, giving the reasoning of ample power in the area and the programs being non-cost effective. Now, however, the company is ready to move forward with the energy efficiency programs. Katie McDonald, spokesperson for KCP&L, says, "We believe now is the time... We’re excited about making the Kansas City region a leader in the state," (Steve Everly, The Kansas City Star.)
In a press release on the agreement, KCP&L's president and CEO, Terry Bassham, shares his enthusiasm around the expansion of programs as well, "These energy-efficiency programs have helped our Greater Missouri Operations customers save millions of kilowatt hours of electricity. We hope to offer more of our customers the chance to save money in their homes and businesses with these programs," (Press Release.)
If the Missouri Public Service Commission approves the agreement, a goal will be set to save enough electricity through 2015 to power 5,000 homes, which equates to reducing carbon emissions by 101,000 tons. The parties involved are hoping for quick action, with rebates being available as early as next month.
