LED Lighting Creeps Toward Tipping Point
The Bank of America Plaza in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is the latest iconic building to undergo an exterior lighting retrofit, aimed to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing safety or aesthetics – thanks to LED lighting.
The tower had 144 metal halide fixtures on it, which were retrofitted with 288 LED fixtures. This will result in a 77 percent reduction in energy use, which translates into an annual savings of $26,897 in energy and operating costs.
Major cities and buildings across the country have made the switch to LED, including Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Despite major savings, LED lighting will account for about 5 percent of all technologies used in retrofit projects this year, according to Navigant Research.
