Intelligent lighting control systems are gaining popularity thanks to the falling cost of light emitting diodes (LEDs) for commercial buildings.
"Falling prices are triggering re-lamping projects in many existing commercial buildings. Because LEDs are particularly well-suited to digital control, many existing commercial building owners will decide to incorporate additional lighting intelligence - including photosensors, dimming ballasts, dimming controls, and the communications and interfaces necessary to tie controls to a building management system."
A recent report from Pike Research found that the adoption of LED lamps and new wireless technology affects the growth in the market for intelligent lighting controls. The global market for intelligent lighting is expected to expand from $1.5 billion this year to more than $4.3 billion in 2020.
Lighting systems that can be controlled centrally give building managers better tools with more information and more control. In most systems, fixtures in a room can communicate wirelessly with each other, allowing for room-level intelligence with a minimal amount of equipment, wiring, and expense.
The report analyzes opportunities for intelligent controls across nine building types including offices, retail, hotels & restaurants, warehouses, and multi-unit residential buildings.
Building managers are quickly beginning to see the benefits of a lighting control system, especially in industries that require much energy usage. Intelligent lighting controls allow building managers to control the lighting of a building from a remote location.
For example, if there are lights that need to be turned off in a particular room, a building manager could monitor its use, and remotely turn off the lighting right from their desk.
