The World competition may be over, but the carbon footprint of the 2012 London Olympics is a lot less thanks to a major player. LED lighting played a large role in the sustainability and record-setting energy efficiency of the games.
Throughout the games, the lights were used to illuminate stadiums, arenas, and the closing ceremony. For example, more than 70,000 LED modules, each containing 9 LED lights, were used to create patterns, text, and animated effects in the crowd sections, and solar-powered LED lights lit up Olympic Park.
Even more impressively, the iconic Tower Bridge in London was retrofitted with an energy-efficient LED lighting system that will benefit the building long after the games.
These are great examples of how energy efficient LED lighting can be. Not only do the light emitting diodes provide a better and more even illumination, they last longer than the average HID light.
